From The Lips of God

Name: Jesse Custer
Alias: Doesn't really have one, or need of one, but is often referred to as The Preacher.
Age: 29

Powers & Handicaps: Jesse holds inside of him all the knowledge of paradise, and a little creature known as Genesis. Well, really, Genesis is what gives him all this knowledge. It also gives him another handy little gift called "The Word of God" which allows him to give orders in a voice that cannot be disobeyed by anybody who hears it. So far it's worked on everybody he's tried it on, even The Saint of Killers.

Despite his knowledge and the creature that's fused with him, Jesse's just a normal human being. He has normal human hang-ups and flaws. He's got to eat and breathe and not die. He smokes like a chimney and drinks like a fish. He has desires and wants and needs just like anybody else does. Sometimes emotions rule Jesse just like they have a habit of doing with others, and sometimes, just sometimes, he acts on them without thinking.

General Appearance: Jesse's a nice looking man of roughly six feet in height, now I've never asked him how much he weighs, but he's not scrawny or anything, that much anybody can see. I'd put him at about 190? Maybe an even 200? You know the type, not too broad, looks like he can hold his own in a fight. He's got black hair that he's let grow a little too long and honey brown eyes that seem soft at first, but once you take a longer look, you can see that the man knows a little too much, has seen things that no man on earth should see.
For all he's been through, he's a little on the scarred side, but nothing much can mar that pretty face of his.

Other Physical Quirks: Our good friend Reverend Jesse Custer is an alcoholic, his liver is more than likely more spotted than a leopard even though he's only recently begun his sojourn into destroying it. His lungs are more than likely two masses of blackened goo, considering the amount he smokes.

Special Abilities: Jesse doesn't have much outside of his preaching, and The Word for special abilities. But he can listen. He can lend an ear to somebody in need. He's a smart fellow and has the ability to reason. For a kid who hasn't gone through much schooling, he's clever enough.

He's quite capable in hand to hand combat, and fixing machinery, thanks to Jody.

Tell us something we don't know about your character: He's glad he's on his own right now. He feels he can get things done better without having to worry about Cassidy or Tulip. It's only his life in danger. He misses them, but feels it's a lot better this way. With the Grail and the Saint after him, he can take care of what he has to take care of without that little extra bit of baggage to hang on to.

Parents, Siblings and Children: John Custer (father, deceased); Christina L'Angelle (mother); Marie L'Angelle (grandmother, deceased); Grand Pere Daronique (uncle)

Occupation/Education: He’s not even got a high school diploma, his insane grandmother made sure of that much. His mother tried to teach him what she could along side his bible lessons. Other than that, there’s not much a boy can learn from a school system. You learn what you learn from life and living it. And Jesse’s learned his fair share.

He used to be a preacher, now he’s hunting God.

Personal History: Jesse’s had a fairly fucked up sort of life. From pretty much the time he was born to know, every step of it’s been hard and unbalanced. He was born into a family of religious psychotics who decided that he was destined to be a preacher. His grandmother decided that the best way to make that happen, was to kill Jesse’s parents. She made sure to do it right in front of them, and then raised the boy up like she wanted him to be.

He tried to have a life. Tried to be his own man and live like he wanted to. He got himself a pretty little girlfriend named Tulip and decided to escape from his grandmother. They went on the road and started up a life of crime. It wasn’t long until he was caught, however, and brought back to her. She dished up a terrible punishment and Jesse was forced to abandon Tulip and vanish from the world.
Of course after that, he became a preacher just like Grandma Marie wanted him to. He got himself his own little church in Annville, Texas, where the people went on Sundays because it looks good to God, not really because of anything else. That all ended when Jesse took to the bottle and found himself in the local watering hole one Saturday night, spilling all the town’s secrets to everybody who would listen. He was saved from a right beating by the bartender, and left outside in a pool of his own vomit.

It just so happened that the next day, the entire town showed up to hear him speak. It also just so happened that the next day the being called Genesis found him and fused with him, incinerating his entire congregation and the building they were sitting in.

With the fusion, Jesse discovered a lot of things. Genesis was the child of an angel and a demon, and God had abandoned it and the world at the moment of it’s birth. He also learned all the secrets of paradise.

Be it Genesis, or be it Fate, Jesse didn’t die with the rest, and was found by Tulip, who just happened to be passing through with a new friend and had seen the mushroom cloud erupt from miles away. She pulled him from the wreckage and they moved on, leaving the police to figure out what had gone on (which they couldn’t do).

Disillusioned with God and man, Jesse rode with Tulip and their new vampire friend Cassidy across the country in a new quest to find God and make him pay for his sins.

The first stop is to go south where they encountered his grandmother and the rest of the family who had abused him as a child and planted the first seeds of disillusionment in the world. At first it doesn’t quite go the way he’d planned it to, and he gets himself and Tulip a little more hurt than he’d wanted to. He discovers The Word won’t work on his family. Grandma allows him one night with Tulip before she was shot. God brings Tulip back in way of a bribe that doesn’t work, and Jesse’s power is restored. In the end, he got the retribution that he’d sought, killing his grandmother and cousins, and the trio headed back west.

Of course, that’s not where the story of Jesse Custer ends, oh no. That would be far too easy. See, there’s this organization called The Grail, God’s own little army to bring forth Armageddon when the time is right and see that the Second Coming happens as planned. Well, here they’ve found out about our good friend Jesse and what has become attached to him. If that weren’t enough, the Adephi have decided that the only way to save themselves and the rest of the Host is to set out the one thing they know won’t stop until the job is done.

So now Jesse’s got the Grail, the Host, the Annville Sheriff and this thing on his tail while he does his thing and tries to find God. All because he knows what Genesis knows, and what Genesis knows is that God is a coward and has left everything because he’s scared.

Let’s jump ahead a bit, shall we? To what’s just recently happened to Jesse Custer in his quest. Where the events round him out to how we see him now. He’s had his encounters, decided that most of the world is a useless place, and taken a moment or two to wonder about his motives and decide that he’s got to continue doing what he’s set out to do.

Jesse was seeking to access the power of Genesis in it’s entirety. To open himself up to the being and really become one with it. So he headed off to Arizona to a little place called Monument Valley to see what he could do about forgetting the flesh and elevating the spirit. He found himself a phone number, and when he called that number, got himself some Peyote and headed out into the middle of the desert.

That’s about right where I come in. You see, I’m that thing that the Adephi sent in after Jesse. I’m that thing that doesn’t stop. Folk who know better call me The Saint of Killers. I caught up with Jesse Custer in Arizona, finally. They woke me up from my peaceful place under Boot Hill, I shot the bastard that did it out of habit. He told me to find Genesis and if it’d found a soul to attach itself to, to kill the man who belonged to that soul. I’ve done nothing but hunt Custer ever since. Coming close a couple of times. But now I’m after the guy for different reasons. See, Jesse’s little piggyback pal has got information on my past that I’d really like to know.

Only I’ve managed to lose him again in the storm of shit that came down in Arizona. The last I seen of Jesse Custer was right before the dickhead, Herr Star showed up. Jesse was right about to tell me what it is that I wanted to know about myself, and Star showed up with his stupid penis lookin head to take Jesse down, and it ended in a grand firefight.

Now I’ve got to look for him all over again, and I’ve tracked him to this blasted city.

Personality: Jesse's a good man, a strong man, and a confused man. It's not easy to go from being a normal sort of guy to being fused with something like Genesis. From knowing nothing more than Faith and the world around you to knowing all the things that have gone on in Heaven. He's dealing with it the best that he can, though.

For all intents and purposes, Jesse's an introvert. You don't go through a childhood like his and come out wanting people to know your business. He plays it off well enough, coming off to others as a strong, independent sort, ready to help where he can and setting aside most of his own personal issues when there's somebody else in need. In his own strange way, most of what he's doing is for the rest of the world.

Jesse’s absolutely driven by the need to find God and make him pay for abandoning Genesis and the rest of the world. Nothing is more important than this. He’s sacrificed much of his life to pursue this goal, and there’s nothing that can convince him it’s not a good idea. People have tried. People have failed.

At times he finds guidance in the form of his childhood hero, John Wayne. Finding himself talking at length with the Spirit of the Duke about his problems and the way things are going. The Duke has some great advice for our friend, but it’s not always Jesse’s prerogative to follow that advice.
